After Josh and I had separated from the group, things went south quickly. Dr. Davis’ group had a midnight flight at the airport, while Josh and I didn’t have a flight until 5pm the next day. After we separated, we got a taxi outside of my old learning center. I gave the taxi driver the address to the hotel but he barely spoke English and didn’t seem to know where he was going. After traveling for about 15 minutes he took us to where he thought our hotel was. Unfortunately, it was not our hotel. I told him to call the number to find out where the hotel was located but he didn’t seem to want to listen to me. He ended up asking 4 different people where this hotel was. After this, I assumed he knew where he was going.
About 5 minutes into our drive I began to get an awful feeling in my stomach. Something wasn’t right. I became several spiritually sick and I signaled 9-1-1 to my brother in the back so he knew I wasn’t feeling right. He ended up taking us to a hotel on the wrong part of town, made us get out, and charged us double the rate he originally offered us. We decided to just go in, call our hotel, and let Adeline and Sam know we were going to be late. However, the night had other things in store for us.
After calling the right hotel twice, they claimed they did not have a reservation for us. Moreover, the email I tried to send to Adeline wouldn’t work. Things quickly turned into a literal nightmare for Josh and I. We decided to just get a room at the place we were dropped off at only to get to our room and the keys not working. Three times we tried to get a new key and three times it failed. We eventually had to get a normal key to open the door to find the room less than appealing and a $15 charge for WIFI that didn’t even work. We were safe, but we were scared nonetheless.
Life Lesson: When taking overseas trips, never travel alone. Always plan things out to the “T” with a backup plan. And finally (more like first) trust God always, and He will bring you through the situation. God puts us in tough situations, not to make us mad, but to rely more on Him.
